Tips for Walkers, Runners, and Dog Walkers

Navigating Public Spaces and Masks

This rapidly changing world of staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic has many of us asking questions to ensure we understand best practices for navigating public spaces to continue our outside routines. And, you may be struggling to adjust to the “new etiquette” for walking around your neighborhood.

The good news is that the impact of the coronavirus has not changed our options to walk or run outside – either solo or with someone in your household. Walking or running is a healthy activity for most of us – physically and for our emotional well-being. (Always check with your AssociatesMD physician before starting a new exercise regime.)

You may be asking: Do I need a mask if I am going to be outdoors?
Here’s some tips your physicians at AssociatesMD want you to know:

  • While we are asked to wear a mask or facial covering, the purpose of the mask is not to protect you, but to protect other people from you. If you are sick, wear one.
  • If you feel more comfortable walking or running with a cloth mask on and think having it on will make others more comfortable, you probably should.
  • You should walk or run in areas where you can be alone or maintain at least six feet between yourself and others to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. (If you’re not feeling well, it’s best to stay home.)
  • It’s not rude to change directions, cross the street or otherwise avoid others on your walk.
  • Keep a spare mask with you. If you are prone to rigorous work outs where you are likely to sweat, bring an extra mask. Look for masks that are moisture-wicking. These may help cut down on droplets being spread to others because of heavy breathing, coughing, and sneezing.
  • When you return home, leave your shoes outside, wash your hands, use a disinfectant to wipe your dog’s leash, and throw away your mask if paper, or wash your cloth mask.
    • For details on wearing and making masks, see our blog Masks 101.
